Trevor's sister Coralie, came to visit us on her return trip to NZ from touring in Europe. We moved to Portland, Maine 2 days before she arrived. I have some trepidation when setting off on secondary, scenic or coastal roads - what will the surface of the highway be like; what overhead bridges and trees will we have to contend with. The GPS is doing a dummy spit again ... But it is good to be on the road again.
The trees have been busy while we have been parked up at Bar Harbor; their leaf colours are more intense. It makes for colourful highways. We drive by gorgeous bays and quaint houses in the pretty towns we pass through. After passing through Bath, the traffic increased markedly. We are now on I 295. We stopped at a Visitors Centre for advice and maps - it looked a breeze. But then we missed the off ramp and then the next ... shit and double shit. Heading for the Maine turnpike!! Finally 'our girl' got us back on track and we followed her faithfully! We booked into Wassamski Springs campground in Scarborough just outside Portland.
The next day we hired a rental car, booked my train trip to New York to meet Coralie, did washing and ... I had a haircut. No appointment. It took 9 minutes. It cost $15.00 plus a tip - go figure!!!!
On 27 September I went to New York to meet Coralie.
Trevor stayed in Maine. He went to the Cumberland Fair.
Although similar to the Perth Show on a smaller scale there were some unusual displays - a pumpkin competition, draft horse pulling, oxen show classes to mention a few.
The train trip to New York took about 6 and a half hours with an hour stop in Boston. I had downloaded a Lee Child onto my Kindle and the time went quickly. The view of the Manhatten skyline in the early evening was quite something! I arrived at Penn station in New York just after 7.30pm. I had booked a hotel nearby. I expected Coralie to be waiting at the hotel, but she hadn't arrived. She didn't get to the hotel until 9.15 after flying into JFK airport on time at 4.30pm! She was kept waiting at JFK with many other passengers - told there had been a bomb scare! A glass of red wine and small meal was just what the doctor ordered. It was good to see her.
The next morning we woke to rain. We were catching the train back to Maine at 11.00am. Only time for breakfast and a coffee before we made a dash in heavy rain back to Penn station. We were both soaked by the time we got to the train. A grey day with little visibility out of the windows. Thank god for Jack Reacher!
Trevor was waiting at the train station. He had booked a restaurant for dinner and then home to the RV.
And now we are 3!!
