Kolob Canyons

The title suggests that we are really into canyons!! We have had a few great days exploring these wonderful spectacles of nature. We have also thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Cedar City.

I make good use of the fitness room at the Best Western Hotel to which our RV park is attached; we have a Starbucks and a cafe that does great coffee within walking distance; I find a bookshop that also swaps books. We must be in heaven! And we have a sporting fixture to attend ...

On Saturday a Soap Box Derby is held on Main Street - we walk one block up the street to the starting line.

Grind Cafe - our local coffee shop!

A new use for a shopping cart?
We spend a couple of hours following the racing.  Coffee at Grind Cafe. I browse the bookshop for books to swap; I swap 5 books. One is a Lee Child  - they are in demand.

Main Street is blocked off for the duration of the Soap Box Derby. Everyone gets into the swing of things - the pits are busy with lots of Dads  fine tuning the 'cars'.

2 of the stars - including one sponsored by the police - clock more than 25 mph.

It looks like a lot of fun!

We also visit Kolob Canyons - conveniently located south of Cedar City just off I-15. We go for a hike - spectacular!!

These canyons are different again from both Zion and Bryce.
The word Kolob means 'star closest to heaven...', named by early Mormons who settled the area which they used for grazing cattle, horses and sheep.

The canyons are designated as wilderness areas and are protected for their pristine environments.

There is a brief thunderstorm while we are at Kolob Canyons with a light shower of rain. We wait in the car until it stops raining.
The climate is tropical - most afternoons the skies darken with some rain then it clears.

We experienced the same when we were at Zion and Bryce. So we know to wait it out! The wait is worth it. Once again we are in awe at the vast, spectacular outlook from all points along the trail.

I wonder who did that?

We stop at Walmart to buy a small esky. We need to be better prepared for hiking expeditions. A beer would be nice after a hike.
I guess we are spoilt in having everything at hand in the RV. With our little esky we are ready for the next time.
We find a Wine and Spirit store - they are state run in Utah. You can only buy packaged beer at the supermarkets. I find a couple of Australian reds. Madfish Bay Shiraz - $11 and Penfolds Koonunga Hill -$9. I can't resist!

We explore more of Cedar City; a drive out on Hwy 56 looking for sheep! We noticed some yards and mobs of sheep on our way into town a few days ago.
We find the same place; there is a guy working sheep in the yards. Trevor has a long chat with him. He is young - his grandfather owns the ranch. Trevor leaves our card. When we get back to the RV we find an email from him, thanking Trevor for stopping in and offering any help or assistance we might need - including some mutton!!

Cedar City from a high spot.

We go out for dinner on Saturday night to Milt's Steakhouse in the canyon, 5 miles up Hwy 14. We share a bottle of wine and each have a fabulous steak. This is a Mothers  Day treat - for tomorrow!
