The Florida Panhandle

Northwest Florida (referred to as the 'Panhandle' for its shape) is best known for its powdery white sand beaches and emerald green waters. You will find many historic homes, buildings and museums in the coastal towns and the sense of history is reinforced by the waterways we cross. The Suwannee river is one such waterway which flows through 8 counties before flowing into the Gulf of Mexico.
Wakulla Springs one of the largest and deepest freshwater springs in the world is located just east of the Apalachicola National Forest. That is where we are headed.  Thanks Caroline for your research!

We set off on Highway 27 in overcast and foggy conditions; so different to south and central Florida.
At Bronson we cross an intersection which we passed through on our way to Cedar Key on 25 November, nearly 6 weeks ago! We were then travelling on Hwy 24.

At Perry we turn onto Highway 98 which we will stay on almost to the Florida state line. It runs along the Gulf of Mexico and is very picturesque.

We follow the gulf. The scenery changes from busy city to rural; horse farms to pine forests. As we get closer to Wakulla the weather closes in even more. There are no RV or state parks with camping close to the Springs so we decide to keep going. We will regret not trying harder to explore the area.

We stop at the Ho Hum RV Park east of Carrabelle . For some reason we have run out of steam.
After the miserable day - weather wise - there is a beautiful sunset!

We have a drink looking out over the gulf.

Friday 4 January - etched in my memory!!
I was up all night vomiting etc. Feel dreadful. Didn't sleep. Trevor slept all night. The next morning I stay in bed while Trevor packs us up.
The weather is really grey and miserable.

We have booked into an RV Park at Mexico Beach about 70 miles along Hwy 98. I don't remember much of the drive. Trevor picked up some tummy sterilizing medicine. As soon as we were parked I went back to bed and stayed there for the rest of the day.

What was in that medicine???
