Don't Mess With Texas!

Low sides!!
Before we leave Abbeville we chat with a young couple from Germany.  They are travelling around the US for 6 months with their 2 year old son. They have a 1989 Tiffin; an early version of our RV. It is great to exchange ideas and experiences with them.  They have a blog and gave us the site, but it is in German!

Hwy 82, another forgotten highway, is a scenic byway - the Creole Nature Trail. We are continuing around the gulf and at times the highway borders the gulf.
There is a lot of water lying on the ground - there have been heavy rains recently. Some cattle on higher ground.
The further west we go the more cattle we see; lots of Brahman cattle.

There is also a variety of birds and wading birds and ... Trevor sees a raccoon. We drive across 80 miles of marsh land with fishing camps dotted along the way. Not many people.

Then the highway leads us to a ferry! Have we made a mistake? No - it's part of the highway. $1 toll but because we are 'American' seniors - no charge. What fun.
Unfortunately we have to stay in the RV during the crossing. When we are midstream the gps says "take the ferry"!

I think we are in its sights!!

There is always one ...

At 2pm we cross the state line into Texas on a bridge across Sabine Lake.

Now we are driving right beside the waters of the gulf.  There are lots of rigs out in the gulf and oil and gas refineries on land - much larger and wider spaces. We are driving in Texas - a first for us!

One long beach has a series of breakwaters along the beach. I guess for some tidal surges?

We are heading for Galveston ... no, not that Galveston.

Yet another bridge.

Are the bridges in Texas bigger than anywhere else?

Large ships on a canal in the distance

We run into another ferry.  This one is much bigger and crosses Galveston Bay, a large expanse of water. We are able to walk around the ferry during the crossing so take the opportunity to photo the RV. Again no cost to travel on the ferry.  It is part of the highway south. We feel like old hands at this ferry game. The RV looks quite at home!

She is at the front of the queue!

The gps has us on  Ferry Rd!

We ring ahead to Dellanera RV Park on San Luis Pass Road, Galveston Island.

It is right on the beach!  We couldn't be closer.  Our bedroom window faces the ocean; we go to sleep to the sound of the (little) waves.
